Lent begins this week! Ash Wednesday occurs 46 days before Easter, in remembrance of Jesus’ fasting in the desert for 40 days. Every Sunday commemorates the Sunday of Christ’s resurrection, so fasting is excluded from the six Sundays in Lent. Ashes from palm branches blessed on last year’s Palm Sunday form a cross on foreheads, with the words ‘Turn away from sin and be faithful to the gospel’ or ‘Remember, you are dust and to dust you will return.’ How will YOU prepare for Lent? Prayer, fasting, and charitable giving are excellent practices during Lent or at any time. But, consider asking yourself this: “How will I prepare myself for this season? What needs to happen within myself so that my actions are filled with greater purpose and reflect my love of God? It is good to have a plan for doing; it is also important to have a plan for being!
